THE NEW FORMAT OF OUR EVENTS (AFTERNOON SESSIONS FOLLOWED BY NETWORKING) ARE PROVING VERY POPULAR, WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT THE NEXT EVENT!

Details of our next event is as follows

DATA SCALING MATTERS
TUESDAY 12TH OCTOBER 2010

Did you know?

• There are already more bits stored on the worlds’ servers than stars in the universe.
• There will be 1,800 exabytes of electronic data (1.8 zetabytes!) by 2011.
• IDC predict that by 2020 we will see a 44x increase in digital information!

Moore's law states that processing capability doubles every 2 years ...... so, .......

WHY DON’T BUSINESS APPLICATIONS BENEFIT FROM THIS ADDITIONAL POWER?

Once upon a time the database was a solution. Now, it is the bottleneck.

Join us as we explore two projects which address how to solve the issue of data scaling.

Our first presentation will introduce you to a breakthrough database technology that unleashes the potential of modern computers to deliver up to 70 times the performance of traditional relational databases. John Kirk from Ingres will explain how Ingres VectorWise has streamlined the database bottleneck into a faster, smarter, and simpler solution for business intelligence and analytics applications.

In our second presentation Manik Surtani will tell us about cloud computing, data grids and the impact these two have on each other. Manik is founder and project lead for Infinispan, an open source, highly scalable data grid platform. Infinispan offers JTA compatibility, write though and write behind caching, passivation, querying and indexing, and most importantly, highly scalable, distributed data storage. It allows the developer to create highly distributed applications through its uncomplicated API for distributed data storage.

Speaker Details:

John Kirk - Account Manager, Ingres Australia
John started work in the IT industry in 2000 and since his first role as an Analyst Programmer and consultant, has built up a background in business analysis, application development, data analysis, project management and sales. He has academic qualifications in Computer Science, Genetics and Bioinformatics. He is also a qualified PRINCE2 practitioner and is doing an MBA in his spare time.
Before joining Ingres Australia in 2007, John worked in consulting, biotech and academic research in South Africa and the UK. He has delivered solutions using a wide variety of software languages, databases and analytics tools including Java, C++, Visual Basic, Perl, MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Oracle and R. His passion to discover the answers to life's important questions has led him to work on analytics applications on massive biological datasets. On one project he built an analytical environment for the UK Dairy industry analyzing milk production with datasets of over 100 billion records.
He is also the current president of Enterprise Java.

Manik Surtani - Lead, Infinispan and Lead, JBoss Cache
Manik is a core R&D engineer at JBoss, a division of Red Hat. He is the founder of the Infinispan project, which he currently leads, and also leads the JBoss Cache project. His interests lie in cloud and distributed computing, autonomous systems and highly available computing. He has a background in artificial intelligence and neural networks, a field he left behind when he moved from academic circles to the commercial world. Since then, he's been working with Java-related technologies, first for a startup focusing on knowledge management and information exchange, and later for a large London-based consultancy as a tech lead focused on e-commerce applications on large Java EE and peer-to-peer technology. Surtani is a strong proponent of open source development methodologies, ethos, and collaborative processes, and has been involved in open source since his first forays into computing.
